Research
During my research I looked at a few music videos to get some ideas on lighting angles and visual style.
The music videos I looked at were
RUSSIAN ROULETTE:
I enjoyed this music video as it was my chosen song and it had the main idea within it such as the angles, props such as the gun and the lighting which is quite dull I also like how on the drum beat it quickly goes from different clips. This helped me with mine as the theme of 'Domestic and emotional abuse' is in it. Which is the theme I went with for my FMP. The technique within this that I used was how it showed a story, and as it was the song I used for my final project I wanted to use this technique.
BURY A FRIEND
I also enjoyed this video as it is very dark style wise and grabs my attention with how it was filmed and the 'spookiness' within the video.
from 00:50-1:30 would be considered 'abnormal' and spooky. This is because the music video is based around schizophrenia and it shows what goes on in her head. This music video helped me with the 'dark' style I wanted with mine.
What are music videos? Performance or narrative music videos:
THE PROMISE by Girls Aloud is a mix between performance and narrative as they are performing in the music video but also showing a story within it. You also see the artists in it which I personally think is what should be in a music video.
My favourite part of the music video is from
00:17-00:43 as it reminds me of the old American drive in cinemas and it really gives a 'old vintage' style effect. I didn't really take any inspiration from this music video however when looking at it again without realising I could of taken the black and white idea from it to put into mine.

THE FLOOD by Take That is a mix between both as the music video tells a story however they are also singing within it and again it also shows the artists.
What I enjoy about this music video is it isn't just singing it has slowed down parts to bring the story together from 00:14-00:58 I feel really brings the story together from the start as it shows them walking with the boat and preparing to race. The inspiration I took from this music video is how it shows a story which is what I wanted to show in mine. I intend to apply this type of technique to my final video in a suitable section.
Going back to early music videos such as Queen I WANT TO BREAK FREE.
This music video is mainly performance as they are all performing and singing in the music video. Also, Queen were one of the earliest music videos.
When this music video first came out it got banned in quite a few places due to the fact they were wearing drag. However, now-a-days people would just see it as normal as men in drag isn't seen as a much of a bad thing as it used to be. It came out in 1984 and back then people didn't really accept 'Drag'. POKER FACE: I enjoy this music video as it is very upbeat and powerful. I like the different kind of effects used within the music video such as the split screens I also enjoy the music video from
00:00-00:27 as it has different speeds of clips, it has slow motion at the start quick cut clips and also has different shot types such as close ups the wide shots. The music video gives off a very happy feeling and would make people feel like they want to get up and dance.

Caitlin said "She is talented, stunning and i like her music and makeup line"
Charlotte said "I think Rihanna used to be a very strong competition in the earlier stages of her career such as umbrella however i think she has weakened over time and that her older songs are more lyrically impressive"
Lena said "I don't listen to her a lot but, i think she is okay"

1. Russian Roulette is very much different ways of dying but representing domestic abuse where as take me to church is more about somebody coming to terms with being homosexual they are two very different music videos. However comparing Russian roulette and Bury a friend by Billie Eilish they are very similar as they are both considered 'Dark' music videos as one is about abuse and death and the other is about schizophrenia. Michael Jackson's ‘Thriller’ music video changed music
videos forever Although it was a little
‘tongue in cheek’ the video manages to capture
the feelings of claustrophobia and helplessness essential to zombie.
What I enjoy about this music video is that it shows a story and how it is a 'horror' genre and from Michael Jackson we never really saw that until 'Thriller'
It really opened our eyes to music videos as a creative form of film-making.
The Verve's ‘Bittersweet Symphony’ was a showstopper when a reunited Verve played the Glastonbury festival in 2008. Ashcroft introduced the song by saying: "Life's a struggle. Monday morning might be a struggle for a lot of you in a job that you despise, working for a boss that you despise. A slave to money, then we die.
Misery' by Maroon 5 show a hidden dark meaning. Despite its upbeat tempo it is actually about being caught up in a torturous relationship
The film industry has also been producing some films with a dark outcome. No Country for Old Men (2007) has an ending that is incredibly somber in that it shows a man who no longer feels capable of fighting back against evil.

Rihanna's Russian Roulette was described by By Simon Vozick-Levinson in Entertainment Magazine as a
risqué subject for any pop song More recently many music videos have shown
a darker side to life.

With this music video I like the one camera shot of him walking as it implies he is just walking through life.

The film The Watchmen is an
example of a film with a darker meaning. I also found out it has no music with it and it makes it more of a mystery as its known for being a 'cat and mouse chase' film and without the music will give it more suspense.
2. I asked people about their thoughts on Beyonce (a similar artist) and the feedback is near enough the same as Rihanna very positive e.g. very inspirational, empowering to women. In October 2017, Alyssa Milano asked the
women to write ‘#MeToo’ if they had ever been sexually harassed or assaulted.
Within days, tens of thousands of women had responded. Within weeks, one of the
most powerful men on the planet was toppled and industries from entertainment
to politics were given a shake-up. One lone voice became a shared voice, which
became a rally cry. “Time’s up,” called Oprah from her Golden Globes podium and
across the world, there was a powerful feeling she could be right.
3. On one blog somebody said 'Rihanna is often represented as sexy. Many feminists may link this representation of Rihanna to Laura Mulroney's 'The Male Gaze', which suggests she has been represented in this manner to attract the approval and interest of a male audience' in other articles it talks about the same topics however, in one they spoke about her some of her album covers are 'Dark' and 'Grunge'. Also, when I read a BBC news article she managed to sue topshop for using her face on a t-shirt without her permission 'Singer Rihanna has won a legal battle against high street store Topshop over a T-shirt bearing her image'. Lindsey Clay, (CEO, Thinkbox ) wrote that in the media women have been firmly placed in the domestic sphere, talking
animatedly about cleaning and housework. She goes on to say ‘ A man stands for
humanity, but ads only show women if it’s something specifically to do with
their gender, like beauty’.

4. When researching about Rihanna on TV i came across an Interview she did on the Ellen DeGeneres show. Rihanna does not come across 'dark' or 'Grungy'. She comes across very 'normal' she doesn't like brag about her fame, However she is not like that.
here is the link to the interview
As an inspirational woman, Rihanna likes to keep things professional and very 'business like' as she has a younger audience. However people do not expect to see her like this they expect her to be a lot more cocky and someone who brags about their fame.
When Rihanna was involved in the advertising campaign for Puma she is seen in a sporty, athletic way. Wide spread use of this image made you feel
that Rihanna was Puma. When advertising
for Christian Dior she took on a different look of elegance reflecting the look
of the brand
5. Rated R (2009)- 6.1 stars
Good girl gone bad (2007)- 7.4 stars
ANTI (2016)- 7.7 Stars
LOUD (2011) 7.6 stars
Majority of her albums are very high rated except Rated R, I personally believe that is due to the song 'Russian Roulette'. The media will ask people to listen to the music and get an average opinion.
6. I asked a few people their thoughts on Rihanna and her music and the feedback was a mixture of loving her and finding her an inspiration to i enjoyed her older music I don't really like her anymore
Jess said "I love Rihanna, her music is always different and every time she collabs with others it sounds good, and i liked her makeup business"Caitlin said "She is talented, stunning and i like her music and makeup line"
Charlotte said "I think Rihanna used to be a very strong competition in the earlier stages of her career such as umbrella however i think she has weakened over time and that her older songs are more lyrically impressive"
Lena said "I don't listen to her a lot but, i think she is okay"
The following is a transcript of an interview with a 17 year old female:
Question 1
Interviewer: How long have you liked the music of Rihanna?
Interviewee: Since I was about 12
Question 2
Interviewer: What appeals to you most about Rihanna?
Interviewee: I like the way she portrays herself as a confident, strong women. I also
think there is a mysterious element to her songs and music videos that makes her stand
out from other artists
Question 3
Interviewer: In your opinion is there any negative things about Rihanna?
Interviewee: Yes. Rihanna has said that she can inspire a lot of young women to be
themselves. But I find this a strange thing to say when she was clearly not being herself
when she was the face of Christian Dior and Puma. She also reinvents herself a lot so
maybe she isn’t sure who she is.

7. I decided to have my target audience as 13-21. Due to the themes as their is a a gun in the video, even though there is no shot of the gun being fired it still indicates the use of the gun, my video will be rated 12 and upwards.
TARGET AUDIENCE
TARGET AUDIENCE
12A is suitable for people under 12 but will need adult
supervision as there may be scenes that will disturb them. I chose 13-21 because
the song and music video suggest violence with the gunshot but does not show it.
The gunshot is a theme that a young child should not experience, this is why it
is rated 12A.
After research I found that the ethnicity groups are going to be varied as she is popular across the world however, she is most popular in Brazil, France and the United States of America. The age of people that most commonly like Rihanna are between the ages of 12-20. However, for my music video my age range is 13-21 because at the age of 13 you have a lot more of an idea of what is going on in the world also you start to mature. With gender of audience, they will typically be female however there is always people outside the demographic of the typical female fans as their will be male fans as well.
With sexuality, there isn’t really a ‘main’ group of people any sexuality can like her music. The majority of her fans would be working class however, any class can like her music it isn’t based on whether you’re working class, middle class or upper class. With lifestyle young people are not going to have jobs and if they do it is going to be minimum wage; they are also going to be living at home with their parents.
Fashion-wise they aren’t really going to have their own style they would be following trends set by Rihanna. Their social habits are going to be staying online to keep up with Rihanna as she has a huge number of followers on Twitter and Instagram.
The current record company that 'own' her is Roc nation.

8. After asking a fan about what they wanted to know and they said "How successful she is as a woman"
As I decided to make a music video I thought I should research into what they are.
I think music videos are a way of showing what songs are trying to show. After research I found out that music videos really became big in the 60's bands such as 'The Beatles' with songs such as 'Paper back Writer'
MTV came about in 1981 which really helped bring out music videos, the first video they broadcast was 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by the Buggles. However now we use YouTube and Vevo for our music videos and MTV is more a reality TV show channel.
